1996 gelang den Waliser der internationale Durchbruch. Nachdem Gitarrist und Texter Richey Edwards 1995 spurlos verschwunden war, wollte sich die Band zuerst auflösen. Irgendwann kam Bassist Nicky Wire mit dem Gedicht "A design for life" an und Sänger/Gitarrist James Dean Bradfield vertonte die zukünftige Hitsingle. Sie fanden es sogut, dass sie weiter machten und dieses Hammeralbum zusammen schusterten; Sehr melancholische und nachdenkliche Songs!<br>-A design for life<br>-The girl who wanted to be god<br>-Everything must go<br>-Australia<br>-No surface all feelings

Ein triumphales und befreiendes Karrierehoch.<br>Kein Song ist schlecht, aber wirklich top sind nur No Surface at feeling und Small Black Flowers.<br>4 reicht völlig.

Nach dem plötzlichen Verschwinden Edwards' hatte die Band zwei Möglichkeiten: sich auflösen oder wie ein Phönix aus der Asche auferstehen. Die Band entschied sich für die zweite Lösung. Präsentiert wurde im Sommer 1996 nach dem zerstörerischen Abgesang "The Holy Bible" ein hymnisches und optimistisches Meisterwerk, welches näher an den Pixies als an Public Image Ltd. gebaut war. Die Texte waren düster, endzeitlich oder schlicht verwirrend, die Musik eingängig, radiotauglich und kapitulierte die Band auf Platz 2 der britischen Charts. Völlig verdientermassen gilt "Everything Must Go" heute als Meisterwerk des Genres und als Beispiel einer Band die ganz unten war, aber glorreich zurückkehrte um grösser zu werden, als sie es je vorhatten.

Weiss noch, wie sehr ich enttäuscht war, nachdem ich das<br>Album zum ersten Mal gehört hatte, nach all den tollen<br>Reviews, die ich (nicht nur auf CH.Hitparade) gelesen<br>hatte. Beim 2. Mal hören gefiel's mir dann aber schon<br>deutlich besser, auch wenn ich es vom künstlerischen<br>Wert her ganz klar hinter "The Holy Bible" einstufen muss.<br><br>Heute würde ich sagen, ein gutes, grundsolides Rockalbum,<br>aber sicher nicht in der Kategorie der "Meisterwerke" des<br>Rocks anzusiedeln....

Zweifelsfrei ein durchaus gutes Album, doch das Ding ging emotional nicht wirklich an mich. 4* sind das aber allemal!

Edit 2020: Sehr einheitliches Album ohne wirkliche Schwachpunkte drauf. Die Songs wirken hier ausgefeilter als zuvor, die Melodien sind überzeugend. Gibt zwar viele Fans der raueren Anfangsphase aber für mich fing hier erst ihr Zenit an. Kann die sehr guten 5 Sterne bestätigen.

Ich schwanke auch zwischen 5 und 6, auch hier greift der Erinnerungsbonus. Dank Liedern wie „Small Black Flowers“ oder „Removables“ kann ich jedoch aufrunden. Mein Ex hat es übrigens gehasst, wenn ich es im Auto gespielt hab. Ich wurde dafür mit Eurodance-Grütze genervt.
